I say this as someone who founded and runs a growing, global, media organisation and describe myself as a digital missionary. I live and work in the digital world and know this is where I am supposed to be.

And it got me thinking…not in a cynical way, but a ‘how do I engage well in this digital world’ kind of way.

Social media is, of course, mostly a fake place in many ways, dominated and managed by computer algorithms – written by people with certain view points – that dictate what we see, when we see it and how we see it, which makes us believe our opinion and view of the world is the commonly held viewpoint and perspective…which is why we can be shocked by people who don’t believe what we believe.

It is made up, mostly, by how those algorithms filter what we see, all for the purpose of advertising to us – if we like what we see we’ll stick with social media, and that reinforces what we see and what we think others see and think too.

Only they don’t see what we see…they truly don’t – just a tweaked version. This is the world I work and live and walk in.

I have been pondering, much, why God led us to begin the Pure Media Family group of ministries including Pure247Radio , the Pure News Magazine, BerryBunch, my own blogging website, books, podcasts and more with more coming.

As I wondered why God got me – an ex trucker of abnormal loads, who sold the family home in 2004 – to sell cloth nappies in a high street shop, which in turn prevented a lap dancing club from opening (long after churches had stopped praying – because “there was no point in praying once planning approval had been reached”, a story I’ll happily share in detail if you want) I wondered why me. What could I do?

And, actually, I can do quite a lot! I could start writing and recording and, eventually, launch a radio station that reaches dozens of countries every month around the world with 3 Point Pure music and chat – free of bad language and that never promotes anything illegal or immoral. I did that. I really did!! So could you!!!

If social media is bad for your mental health, just stop using it. No worries.We don’t need it as humans and if it is making you feel frightened or is upsetting you lots then, just like the news, switch it off. You don’t need to know about world events or geo political struggles, to be and to do what God has called you to do.

But we need to remember what social media can do – it can bring society together.

I have no blood family in my life – that wasn’t healthy for me or for us. But, through social media, my family has been given Mary – a woman I actually call my mom. She lives in Montana. We’ve never met her. She is grandma to my three boys and I call her my mother. In turn she calls me her son and Jo her daughter. Why? Because of social media and how God used that in a beautifully redemptive way.

Social media enabled that and it is beautiful if used righteously.

So, don’t give up on people just because social media has upset you. If we stop talking we make the world a smaller place. So, let’s make it a bigger world and use our social media accounts to build up people and bring people together, not rip them apart.
